{"id":10537,"date":"2018-09-06T10:05:47","date_gmt":"2018-09-06T14:05:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mote.org\/?p=10537"},"modified":"2024-06-01T10:09:06","modified_gmt":"2024-06-01T14:09:06","slug":"new-treatment-being-developed-for-manatees-poisoned-by-red-tide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mote.org\/news\/new-treatment-being-developed-for-manatees-poisoned-by-red-tide\/","title":{"rendered":"New treatment being developed for manatees poisoned by red tide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Florida International University and Mote Marine Laboratory are developing new and more efficient ways to treat manatees exposed to toxic red tide.<\/p>\n<p>Through a $428,000 grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/coastalscience.noaa.gov\/research\/stressor-impacts-mitigation\/ecohab\/\">ECOHAB program<\/a>, FIU and Mote are launching a three-year project to improve veterinary care for rescued manatees by studying how the cells in their immune system respond to certain antioxidants.\u00a0The goal is to identify those antioxidants that may work better than the current treatment, which uses anti-inflammatory substances.<\/p>\n<p>FIU chemist\u00a0Kathleen Rein\u00a0and Mote marine immunology expert\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mote.org\/staff\/member\/catherine-walsh\">Cathy Walsh<\/a>\u00a0are leading the research team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current approach is simply to give palliative care and wait for them to clear the toxin and get better,\u201d Rein said. \u201cThis new treatment could accelerate the healing process. If this treatment is successful, it could be used with many other animals including dolphins, turtles and birds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Red tide toxins can compromise a manatee\u2019s immune system, causing a harmful phenomenon known as oxidative stress and leaving the animal vulnerable to illness. Credit: Conor Goulding\/Mote Marine Laboratory<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The current bloom of\u00a0Karenia brevis\u00a0\u2014 the microscopic algae causing the Florida red tide \u2014 is the worst the state has seen since 2005. Seven counties are currently in a state of emergency with no predictions on how long the current red tide bloom will last.<\/p>\n<p>Red tide is to blame for <a href=\"https:\/\/myfwc.com\/research\/manatee\/rescue-mortality-response\/statistics\/mortality\/red-tide\/\">10 percent of\u00a0manatee deaths<\/a> over the last 10 years. During bloom years, that number jumps to 30 percent. More than 575 manatees have already died this year including 103 suspected or confirmed\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/myfwc.com\/media\/4363682\/2018PreliminaryRedtide.pdf\">red tide cases<\/a>, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. This surpasses the year-long total of 538 from 2017.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarmful algal blooms are global threats to ecosystems and people,\u201d said Mike Heithaus, dean of FIU\u2019s College of Arts, Sciences &amp; Education. \u201cThis collaboration between our researchers and Mote is exactly the type of collaboration we need to help the state of Florida.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just two years ago, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service changed the manatee\u2019s status\u00a0from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fws.gov\/southeast\/news\/2017\/03\/manatee-reclassified-from-endangered-to-threatened-as-habitat-improves-and-population-expands-existing-federal-protections-remain-in-place\/\">endangered to threatened.<\/a>\u00a0Rein and Walsh\u2019s research, if ultimately applied successfully to veterinary care, may help keep manatees from plummeting back to endangered status.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Florida International University and Mote Marine Laboratory are developing new and more efficient ways to treat manatees exposed to toxic red tide.
