This extension places a strong emphasis on advancing Tier 3 research projects to support field testing and to identify the logistical challenges and response procedures required for effective red tide mitigation.<\/li>\n<li>Mote maintains ongoing communication with community partners across southwest Florida\u2014including local governments, homeowners\u2019 associations, waterkeepers, police departments, marine patrol units, and other stakeholders\u2014to ensure the public remains informed of deployments.<\/li>\n<li>On November 12, Mote, in coordination with BlueGreen Water Technologies and Emerge Marine, deployed Lake Guard Oxy in the waters adjacent to Sapphire Shores Park in Sarasota. Although this tier-3 deployment occurred in the absence of an active red tide bloom, it provided researchers with valuable insights into logistical considerations, allowed refinement of response protocols, and strengthened overall readiness for future mitigation efforts.<\/li>\n<li>In December, Mote conducted a logistical deployment in San Carlos Bay near Fort Myers using Prescott Clean Water Technologies\u2019 Ozonix trailer mounted on a barge. While previous deployments confirmed the technology\u2019s ability to operate from land-based platforms, this was the first time it was tested while being towed on the water.<\/li>\n<li>Staff presented Initiative updates to the FL Harmful Algal Bloom Task Force on December 9th.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div><div class=\"card\"><div class=\"card-header\" id=\"heading-card-0-1\">\n                    <span data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#card-0-1\" aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-controls=\"card-0-1\">\n                    Winter &amp; Spring 2024-2025\n                    <span class=\"accordion-icon\"><\/span>\n                    <\/span>\n            <\/div>\n            <div id=\"card-0-1\" class=\"collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"heading-card-0-1\" data-parent=\"#1\">\n                <div class=\"card-body\">\n                    <ul>\n<li>On January 15th, Mote published its fifth <a href=\"https:\/\/mote.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/RedTideInitiative_AccomplishmentsPrioritesReport2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Initiative Report<\/a> (click thumbnail to view or download), a requirement of 379.2273(2)(d) Florida Statutes. It contains an overview of the Initiative\u2019s accomplishments to date and priorities for subsequent years:<\/li>\n<li>Mote hosted the 3rd Red Tide Initiative Workshop in January with over 70 participants. The workshop included project presentations from scientists funded by the Initiative, a panel of emergency response companies to discuss deployment strategies, and discussions with local, state and federal representatives on permitting and regulations.<\/li>\n<li>On January 29th, Mote and partners hosted a media day to announce three promising red tide mitigation technologies have completed rigorous laboratory testing and received regulatory approvals to begin the field deployment research stage. For more information: <a href=\"https:\/\/mote.org\/news\/mote-and-partners-field-testing-promising-red-tide-initiative-technologies\/\">Mote and Partners Field-Testing Promising Red Tide Initiative Technologies | Mote Marine Laboratory &amp; Aquarium<\/a><\/li>\n<li>On February 14th, <a href=\"https:\/\/mote.org\/news\/mote-and-partners-conduct-first-of-its-kind-red-tide-mitigation-field-test-during-an-active-bloom\/\">Mote conducted the first major tier 3 field trial with products Xtreme and Clear<\/a> in two Venice, FL canals with bloom concentrations of Karenia brevis. Results showed a 70-80% reduction in red tide cells within an hour. More field trials will be conducted to establish a better understanding of how these mitigation technologies interact in the natural environment.<\/li>\n<li>Staff presented Initiative updates to the FL Harmful Algal Bloom Task Force on February 25th.<\/li>\n<li>On April 1st, the Red Tide Initiative was represented at Ocean\u2019s Day in Tallahassee, FL to communicate Initiative progress to Florida Legislatures among other Mote research programs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div><div class=\"card\"><div class=\"card-header\" id=\"heading-card-0-2\">\n                    <span data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#card-0-2\" aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-controls=\"card-0-2\">\n                    Summer &amp; Fall 2024\n                    <span class=\"accordion-icon\"><\/span>\n                    <\/span>\n            <\/div>\n            <div id=\"card-0-2\" class=\"collapse \" aria-labelledby=\"heading-card-0-2\" data-parent=\"#1\">\n                <div class=\"card-body\">\n                    <ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s2\">The Florida Red Tide Mitigation and Technology Development Initiative was renewed on July 1, 2024 by the Governor and Legislature under <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leg.state.fl.us\/STATUTES\/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&amp;Search_String=&amp;URL=0300-0399\/0379\/Sections\/0379.2273.html\">Florida Statute 379.2273.<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Mote staff attended the US HAB Symposium in Portland, Maine in October 2024 to represent the Red Tide Initiative with numerous presentations and posters on recent progress.<\/li>\n<li>On November 12th, Mote hosted the 9th Red Tide Technology Advisory Council (TAC) Meeting. More information can be found on the Technology Advisory Council <a href=\"https:\/\/mote.org\/research\/centers-of-excellence\/red-tide-initiative\/technology-advisory-council\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>During the Fall, a natural red tide bloom occurred across southwest Florida, providing projects the opportunity to test red tide mitigation tools and techniques in the field. It contains an overview of the Initiative&#8217;s accomplishments to date and priorities for subsequent years:<\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s2\">In February, Mote staff attended the Gulf of Mexico Conference in Tampa, Florida to present current Red Tide research funded by the Initiative.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s2\">During the Spring, multiple Initiative projects that were approved for field testing began small scale trials in a secluded canal to understand real-world application of mitigation products. The proper permits were acquired from the\u00a0Environmental Protection Agency, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and Florida Department of Environmental Protection. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s2\">Mote is working with a growing number of state approved Emergency Response Organizations to coordinate and execute the deployment of red tide products.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s2\">In June, Mote Staff attended the\u00a0Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography in Madison, Wisconsin to participate in a session on\u00a0prevention, control, and mitigation (PCM) of harmful algae blooms (HABs).<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s2\">The Initiative program continues to synergize with the U.S. Harmful Algal Bloom Control Technologies Incubator and the FLDEP Innovative Technologies for HABs Program by leveraging funds for projects and providing testing space at Mote\u2019s Red Tide Initiative Facility.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n        <\/div><div class=\"card\"><div class=\"card-header\" id=\"heading-card-0-4\">\n                    <span data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#card-0-4\" aria-expanded=\"true\" aria-controls=\"card-0-4\">\n                    Summer &amp; It contains an overview of the Initiative&#8217;s accomplishments to date and priorities for subsequent years.<\/li>\n<li>Since the grand opening of the Red Tide Mitigation and Technology Development Facility\u00a0in August 2021, Mote has hosted six Initiative projects and seven partner institutions to complete experimental testing of mitigation tools\/technologies on red tide and various natural ecosystem components.<\/li>\n<li>Mote developed a new area within the Red Tide Mitigation and Technology Development Facility to streamline processing red tide samples for toxins as part of Initiative research.<\/li>\n<li>Mote highlighted the progress of the Red Tide Initiative at a reception with numerous posters and scientists available to explain the research findings and next steps at the Florida Capitol during Florida\u2019s Oceans Day in Tallahassee on Feb. 1, 2022.<\/li>\n<li>The 4th Request For Proposals was opened on Feb. 11, 2022, and closed April 15, 2022.<\/li>\n<li>On Feb. 18, 2022, in accordance with\u00a0379.2273 Florida Statutes,\u00a0Mote hosted the fifth meeting of the Red Tide Initiative Technology Advisory Council at Mote Aquaculture Research Park, providing a tour of the Red Tide Mitigation Facility for the TAC members and public attendees.
