This biodiversity translates to incredible chemical diversity, and the intense competition for resources observed in marine ecosystems promotes the evolution of secondary metabolites, or marine natural products. In Mote&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/mote.org\/research\/program\/marine-microbiology\/\">Marine Microbiology Program<\/a>, Dr. Francis focuses on identifying bioactive natural products from marine microorganisms with potential in many therapeutic applications.<\/p>\n<p>Interns in this program will be able to complete multidisciplinary projects involving microbiology, organic chemistry, and\/or molecular biology. Responsibilities may include culturing activities to maintain and expand the Mote microbial library, development of microbial extracts, testing microbial extracts for a variety of biological activities (antibacterial, antifungal, cancer cell cytotoxicity, etc.), and purification and structure elucidation of active compounds using analytical chemistry techniques.<\/p>\n<h6>The roles and responsibilities of a Molecular Microbiology intern include:<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>Culturing activities to maintain and expand the Mote microbial library<\/li>\n<li>Development of microbial extracts<\/li>\n<li>Testing microbial extracts for a variety of biological activities (antibacterial, antifungal, cancer cell toxicity, etc)<\/li>\n<li>Purification and structure elucidation of active compounds using analytical chemistry techniques<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6>Qualifications:<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>Coursework in microbiology or organic chemistry<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate an interest in laboratory techniques<\/li>\n<li>Prior lab experience is helpful but not required<\/li>\n<li>Please note the majority of research activities are carried out at the <a href=\"https:\/\/mote.org\/location\/sarasota-aquaculture-park\/\">Mote Aquaculture Park (MAP)<\/a>; a satellite site located in eastern Sarasota County, Florida, approximately 17 miles from the main laboratory.\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Interns must have their own transportation to\/from this location<\/span> since Sarasota&#8217;s public transportation system does not extend to the Park.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Molecular Microbiology interns are accepted year round, with an average internship length of 10-12 weeks. Hours are primarily Monday-Friday from 9-5.
